To meet the final step of our 5 Point Water Action Plan, the District actively seeks local partnerships and projects that will restore and improve our waterways and help fish passage.
Restore the St. Vrain and Left Hand Creeks
The recently completed Stream Management Plan identified several reaches of St. Vrain and Left Hand creeks that need to be restored to stabilize each creek’s channel and reconnect each to its floodplain. Multi-entity, strategic partnerships and extensive fundraising efforts are necessary to restore both creeks sufficiently.
Key improvements to fish diversion structures and passages
Using the Passage Playbook, the District is partnering with local governments and non-profits to improve how fish move within and across the watershed’s creeks. Channel-spanning, water-diversion structures can easily block fish from different parts of a waterway. This fragmentation hurts fish populations since they can’t migrate for reproduction, food foraging, or escaping from threats such as high temperatures or floods (how they survive winter). The Playbook outlines an approach that respects the water rights of the owner to divert water and recommends an approach to work collaboratively with the diversion owner to retrofit the diversions to meet water and ecosystem needs.
