Opposing Out-of-basin Water Transfers (“agricultural buy & dry”)

Demand for water elsewhere continues to pressure our valleys’ water resources. Our historical agricultural area could be completely transformed if outside interests transfer away all our water (“agricultural buy & dry”). Several proposed pipelines at the confluence of St. Vrain Creek and the South Platte River are particularly concerning. The new infrastructure could act as a gateway for entities outside our valleys (or basins) to withdraw local water supplies.

Partnering with local water providers.

A majority of urban water is used for outdoor irrigation. Partnering with local water providers on outdoor conservation education increases water efficiency and conservation for long-term water sustainability. This will also help us offer greater opportunities for environmental and recreational water use.

Sharing key conservation messaging as media opportunities arise.

The District, to represent its constituents’ interests and educate the larger public, regularly speaks with the media about local and regional water issues. District staff also present frequently at local, regional, and state conferences to bring awareness to our watershed and the important model being set by our water managers.
